This Adapter Lets You Autofocus Leica M Lenses on Fujifilm Cameras

Leica M mount lenses are all manual focus, but that doesn’t mean you can’t “add” autofocus… with the right adapter. That’s what Fotodiox has created with their latest gambit: a specialized adapter that lets you focus M-mount lenses on Fujifilm cameras by moving the lens back and forth as you focus.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen something like this. Techart got there first in 2016 with their Leica M to Sony E-Mount smart adapter, and Mathieu Stern put together a great little video showing how it could be used with additional “dumb” adapters to add autofocus to a 120-year-old lens.

The newest Fotodiox “PRONTO AF” adapter is basically the same thing, except that it lets you attach and autofocus Leica M glass on Fujifilm X-series cameras. It was apparently announced “a few months ago,” according to Leica Rumors, but it’s now finally available to pre-order online.

Here’s a closer look at the Leica-to-Fuji version of the adapter:

Which is essentially identical to the Leica-to-Sony PRONTO adapter, demonstrated below:

Of course, an adapter like this won’t work perfectly. It’s best suited for 50mm lenses and wider, and you’ll need to set your lens to infinity focus before you attach it to the adapter, assuming you want the full focus range. Finally, when using with telephoto optics, you may need to make “coarse” focus adjustments manually before letting the AF handle the fine tuning.

Still, if you want to focus Leica M lenses on your Fuji X camera, this is the only game in town.

The new Fotodiox PRONTO AF LM-FX adapter is available to pre-order now for $350. To learn more or pick one up for yourself, head over to the Fotodiox website.
