We are currently hiring for two roles: a News Editor and multiple News Writers.
News Editor – Full Time, Contract
PetaPixel is looking for a talented wordsmith with speedy fingers as well as a keen editing eye to help lead our daily news coverage across a host of topics ranging from photography, technology, mobile, culture, and more. The ideal candidate has a passion for imaging and computing technology but also for keeping abreast of the latest breaking news and knows how to find the best stories and frame them for PetaPixel.
The News Editor will report to the Editor-in-Chief and work closely to cover, assign, and edit news stories from across PetaPixel’s staff.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate professional daily editing experience of at least two years and have at least three additional years of online publishing experience. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with juggling a large amount of information in the form of stories, communications through email and Slack, and be able to prioritize tasks both individually and also in conjunction with the editing team.
Responsibilities
- Writing/editing five to nine (never one or the other alone) news stories a day with a focus on breaking news and updates.
- Is encouraged to write original feature or opinion stories when the inspiration strikes.
- Run the daily morning news stand-up.
- Monitor the daily news cycle closely and determine what content is suited for publication on PetaPixel.
- Become a point of contact with companies on behalf of PetaPixel.
- Lead event coverage where applicable.
Requirements
- High school degree (or equivalent), college degree is a bonus.
- Minimum 2+ years of editing experience and 3 additional years of online publishing experience.
- Be accustomed to working in a small, fast-moving newsroom.
- Keep a high level of organization among news stories, writers, and editing queues.
- Flexibility to shift a five day work week from Mon-Fri to Wed-Sun is a plus.
- Knowledge of the AP style is a plus.
- Location in the East Coast of North America is a plus, but not required.
- Familiarity with WordPress, Asana, Slack, and Google Docs is a plus but not required.

News Writer – Freelance
PetaPixel is looking for tech-savvy writers to help with our daily news coverage across a host of topics in photography, technology, mobile, culture, and more. The ideal candidate has a passion for imaging and computing technology but also for keeping abreast of the latest breaking news and is able to produce well-written content quickly as assigned.
News Writers report to the News Editor and the Editor-in-Chief to cover breaking news, developing stories, events, and interesting topics from photography, imaging, art, and science.
While prior experience in online publishing is not necessary, it is a plus. The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp of both technical as well as artistic aspects of photography as well as clearly articulate those concepts in a way that is interesting and informative.
Requirements
- High school degree (or equivalent), college degree is a bonus.
- Experience writing short-form, explanatory articles.
- Experience with Google Docs, Microsoft Word, etc.
- Good communication skills.
- Basic experience with WordPress is a plus, as is knowledge of the AP Style.
