Celebrate Service 2013 0263 399x600 Celebrate Service Dave Carroll United Breaks Guitars Book Giveaway!

Bad customer service just sucks!  Most everyone has experienced it at some point or another in their life time.  Dave Carroll shared his experience with the winners of the Celebrate Service awards banquet from Celebration Cinema this week.  It was a great event and I was blessed to be there to photograph it.  Photographing an event like Celebrate Service is like not working at all.  I learned so much from Dave Carroll and the winners of the local awards.  Celebration Cinemas know how to promote great service.  They went above and beyond to honor local businesses from their different markets across West Michigan.

One  of my favorite businesses to win was The Parlor Tattoo of Benton Harbor Michigan. I liked the fact that they won because they are a small business who knows customer service.  Small businesses make up the majority of businesses in our country yet few are recognized in such a big way.  The awards were voted on by the public in the service area where the business is located.  The voting this year was intense!

The Gallery- Guest Blog Post

When someone walks into our apartment, they are greeted with what we refer to as our “Gallery Wall”.  It is a collection of 50 or so of our favorite stories – turned into pictures – on display for all to see. It took planning and preparation and time to put it together, but in the end our efforts were worth it.  Because it wasn’t until this collage was on display that our new apartment finally felt like our new home.

What is it about displaying pictures that makes a house feel like a home and what pictures meet the criteria for wall adornment?  Why is it that our new apartment didn’t feel like ‘home’ until this collage was on our wall?  This is something I’ve been pondering quite a bit lately, and I think I’ve finally found my answer.
Josh and I find value and meaning in printed pictures because we find value and meaning in the life that we have lived and created. If you look closely at the Gallery, you will find evidence of loved ones who have passed on, our wedding day, our best friends, our silliness, and our adventures. The same way it takes individual chapters to compose a book, it takes individual images to express the fullness of our Story. Because there are some moments that simply cannot be described with words (like walking down the aisle to marry my Love), but can be understood by seeing the look on my face in a photograph.  Home is a place where all it takes is a quick glance at picture-covered walls to be reminded that yes, I am loved.
Does your home tell your story or is it just your facebook page that talks?  Can your children see, every single day, the joy on your faces as you exchanged wedding vows?  In an age of twitter, iPhone, and instagram, we need to protect the art of printed pictures.  We need to tell our stories on our walls and not just in our computers.
A picture says a thousand words when even a thousand words seems insufficient to tell the fullness of our story.  So we will keep living, keep photographing, and continue to share our adventures.  Because that’s what photography is really about anyway, isn’t it?  A visual representation of our stories and adventures; tales told in photographic chapters; stories that have shaped us and others… stories that deserve to be told because they have made us who we are today.

Land of the Free, Home of the Brave! – Thank you to our Veterans

Land of the Free, Home of the Brave! – Thank you to our Veterans

Our country is what it is today because of those who gave so much. The photos taken on D-Day, Pearl Harbor, and other conflicts that shaped our history are the images that defined us. To be a photographer in those days meant risking your life just so we could have the story. In today’s generation we don’t get to see the same images, because we see so many. When is the last time you saw a photo of the War in Iraq that told the story. So my thanks is to all the soldiers, but my focus is on those who stopped, snapped a photo, and then shared with us those moments.

Thank you!

Wedding Officiant Portrait- Grand Rapids, MI

Every wedding has to have an officiant.  For some its a pastor, others a friend, some Elvis.  Tim and Connie chose their friend “Cogsworth” (I can’t remember his name now).  The ceremony started like any other, “Cogsworth” was given a gift of Jameson as a token of the couples appreciation.  The music played the bridal party took its places on stage at St. Cecilia’s Music Center.  Instead of candles there was red and white wine mixed together.  There was even a bit of humor “Marriage is what joins us together… ” In the tone and style of Princess Bride.

“Cogsworth” could dance as well.  Hitting the floor at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.  Fun times!

Do you remember who married you?
